About the Shingle Quantity Calculator

Ordering the right number of shingle bundles is critical for a smooth roofing project. Too few bundles mean a work stoppage while waiting for a second delivery, and too many mean wasted money and storage hassles. This shingle quantity calculator considers your roof area, shingle type, and waste factor to give you a precise bundle count.

The calculator supports the three main categories of asphalt shingles: 3-tab (the most economical, at 3 bundles per square), architectural or dimensional (the most popular, at 3–4 bundles per square), and premium designer shingles (at 4–5 bundles per square). Each type has different coverage per bundle based on the shingle's exposure and overlap.

By entering your total roof area and selecting your shingle type, you get the exact number of bundles to order. The built-in waste factor accounts for starter strips, ridge caps, hip caps, cuts at valleys and edges, and a small buffer for damaged shingles.

When This Page Helps

Shingle bundles can't be split — you buy whole bundles. Ordering even one bundle short can delay your project by a day or more. This calculator rounds up properly and includes waste so your delivery covers the entire job, including starter strips and ridge caps.

How to Use the Inputs

  1. Enter the total roof area in square feet (after applying slope factor).
  2. Select the shingle type (3-tab, architectural, or premium).
  3. Set the waste factor (10–15% is typical).
  4. Review the total squares, bundles needed, and weight.
  5. Order the indicated number of bundles from your supplier.
Formula used
Adjusted Area = Roof Area × (1 + waste%/100) Squares = Adjusted Area / 100 Bundles = Squares × Bundles per Square Round up to whole bundles

Example Calculation

Result: 24 squares, 96 bundles

Adjusted area = 2,000 × 1.12 = 2,240 sq ft. Squares = 2,240 / 100 = 22.4, round up to 23. Wait — for bundles: 22.4 squares × 4 bundles/square = 89.6, so 90 bundles. The extra partial square is absorbed by rounding up bundles.

Tips & Best Practices

  • Three-tab shingles always come 3 bundles per square. Architectural varies by brand — check the label.
  • Order starter strip shingles separately: about 1 bundle per 100 LF of eave.
  • Ridge/hip cap shingles are separate: about 1 bundle per 35 LF of ridge/hip.
  • Keep 2–3 extra bundles from the same lot for future repairs and color matching.
  • In hot weather, handle bundles carefully — the adhesive strips can bond during storage.
  • Verify that your roof deck can support the weight: architectural shingles weigh 250–400 lbs per square.

Shingle Types Compared

Three-tab shingles are the economy option: lightweight, flat, and affordable at $80–$100 per square installed. Architectural shingles are the industry standard: dimensional look, better wind ratings (110–130 mph), and 30–50 year warranties at $100–$180 per square. Premium designer shingles mimic slate, cedar, or tile at $200–$400+ per square with lifetime warranties.

Coverage Per Bundle

A bundle of 3-tab shingles covers exactly 1/3 of a square (33.3 sq ft). Architectural shingles vary: CertainTeed Landmark covers 32.3 sq ft per bundle (3.1 bundles/square), GAF Timberline covers 33.3 sq ft (3 bundles/square), and Owens Corning Duration covers about 32.5 sq ft. Always verify the specific product's coverage.

Waste Factor Guidelines

Simple gable roof: 10% waste. Hip roof: 12–15%. Complex roof with valleys, dormers, and multiple planes: 15–20%. T-shaped or L-shaped roofs: 15–18%. The waste accounts for cuts, damaged shingles, starter strips, and ridge cap.
