Types of Thinset Mortar

Unmodified thinset is basic Portland cement and sand. Modified thinset adds polymers for better adhesion and flexibility. Large and heavy tile (LHT) thinset is formulated for tiles over 15” with non-sag properties. Medium-bed thinset allows thicker application (up to 3/4”) for leveling substrates during installation.

Trowel Size Guide

The trowel controls the amount of thinset applied. Tiles up to 4”: 3/16” V-notch. 4”–8”: 1/4”×1/4” square. 8”–12”: 1/4”×3/8”. 12”–18”: 1/2”×1/2”. 18”+: 3/4”×3/4”. Hold the trowel at 45° for consistent notch ridges.

Proper Mixing

Mix thinset with clean water per label directions. Use a mixing paddle on a drill at low speed. Let the mix slake (rest) 5–10 minutes, then remix. The proper consistency holds a ridge when the trowel is pulled through it without slumping.

Coverage Testing

Pull up a tile after setting it to check thinset coverage. The back should be 95%+ covered with no voids. Adjust trowel angle and size if coverage is low. Voids under tiles cause hollow spots that crack under pressure.
