The fertile window is the group of days in a cycle when pregnancy is possible, created by the fact that sperm can survive for several days while the egg remains viable for only a short time after ovulation. In practice, that means timing matters more than many couples assume.
The highest probability of conception is usually not ovulation day itself, but the one to two days before it. That is why a simple ovulation estimate is helpful, but a full fertile-window view is usually more practical for timing intercourse.
This calculator maps that complete window and identifies the likely highest-probability days so fertility timing is based on the broader biology rather than a single date.
A fertile-window estimate is more useful than an ovulation date alone because the best timing usually begins before ovulation. This page helps identify that broader window so conception timing can be planned with a more realistic target.
Ovulation day = LMP + (cycle_length - 14)
Fertile window start = ovulation day - 5
Fertile window end = ovulation day
Peak fertility = ovulation day - 2 to ovulation day - 1
Conception probability by timing:
5 days before ovulation: ~10%
2 days before: ~25-30%
1 day before: ~25-30%
Ovulation day: ~10-15%
Day after ovulation: ~0-5%Result: Fertile window Jan 10-15; Peak Jan 13-14
For a 28-day cycle starting January 1, ovulation is estimated on January 15. The fertile window runs from January 10 through January 15, with peak fertility on January 13-14 (one and two days before ovulation).
The fertile window exists due to the lifespan mismatch between sperm and egg. Sperm can survive in the cervical crypts for up to 5 days, gradually being released to travel toward the egg. The egg, once released, survives only 12-24 hours. This creates a 6-day conception window ending on the day of ovulation.
Not all fertile window days are equal. Intercourse 5 days before ovulation has only about a 10% chance of conception per cycle for healthy couples. At 1-2 days before ovulation, that rises to 25-30%. Understanding this gradient helps couples focus their efforts on the most productive days.
If you have been timing intercourse during your fertile window for 12 months (or 6 months if over 35) without conception, consult a fertility specialist. The issue may not be timing โ factors like egg quality, sperm quality, tubal health, or uterine conditions may need evaluation.

About 6 days per cycle โ the 5 days before ovulation and ovulation day itself. However, the highest-probability days are only 2-3 days within this window. Outside the fertile window, pregnancy is essentially impossible.
Research shows the day before ovulation and two days before ovulation have the highest per-cycle conception probability, approximately 25-30%. Ovulation day itself has a lower probability (~10-15%) because the egg may not have enough time to be fertilized.
Pregnancy outside the fertile window is essentially impossible. The egg must be present (or arrive within hours) and viable sperm must be in the reproductive tract. Without both conditions, fertilization cannot occur.
Calculators provide estimates based on average cycle patterns. Actual ovulation can vary by several days. For the most accurate fertile window detection, combine calculator estimates with ovulation predictor kits and cervical mucus observation.
During the fertile window, intercourse every 1-2 days is optimal. Daily intercourse is fine and does not meaningfully reduce sperm quality for most men. Every other day is equally effective and less demanding.
Yes. Cervical mucus is one of the most reliable fertility signs. As you approach ovulation, mucus becomes clear, stretchy, and slippery (like raw egg white). This fertile-quality mucus helps sperm survive and travel to the egg.
