About the Lunar Age Calculator

The Lunar Age Calculator determines your age according to the lunar calendar system used traditionally in Chinese culture and other Eastern traditions. The lunar calendar follows moon cycles (synodic months of ~29.53 days), making a lunar year approximately 354 days โ€” about 11 days shorter than a solar year.

In Chinese tradition, a person's lunar age is calculated differently: you are 1 year old at birth (counting time in the womb), and you gain a year at each Lunar New Year rather than on your birthday. This means your lunar age can be 1-2 years higher than your Western age, similar to the Korean age system but based on the Lunar New Year date rather than January 1st.

Lunar age calculations are important for traditional Chinese practices including zodiac readings, fortune telling, Chinese medicine age-related treatments, and cultural celebrations. This calculator shows your approximate lunar age, the number of lunar months lived, and your Chinese zodiac sign.

When This Page Helps

Understanding lunar age is essential for Chinese cultural practices, zodiac readings, and traditional ceremonies. This calculator bridges the gap between solar and lunar calendars.

How to Use the Inputs

  1. Enter your date of birth using the date picker
  2. View your approximate lunar age and lunar months
  3. See your Chinese zodiac animal and element
  4. Compare your lunar age with your solar (Western) age
  5. Check total moon cycles since your birth
  6. View the approximate Lunar New Year dates
  7. Use the reference date field to calculate lunar age at any point
Formula used
Lunar Months = Days Lived / 29.53059 (synodic month). Lunar Years = Lunar Months / 12. Chinese Lunar Age = Current Year (lunar) - Birth Year (lunar) + 1. Zodiac Animal = Birth Year mod 12.

Example Calculation

Result: Lunar age: ~31, Solar age: 29, ~369 lunar months

Born August 15, 1995: approximately 369 synodic months (lunar months) have elapsed. In the Chinese counting system, adding 1 year at birth gives a lunar age of about 31.

Tips & Best Practices

  • Lunar age is always 1-2 years more than your Western age
  • The Chinese zodiac animal is determined by your birth year, not month
  • Lunar New Year falls between Jan 21 and Feb 20 each year
  • A leap lunar month is added roughly every 3 years to sync with solar seasons
  • The Chinese Gender Calendar uses lunar age to predict a baby's sex
  • Each zodiac animal has a corresponding element that cycles every 60 years

The Lunar Calendar System

The Chinese lunar calendar (also called lunisolar) combines lunar months with solar year adjustments. Each month begins on the new moon and lasts about 29.53 days. To keep the calendar aligned with seasons, a leap month is added approximately every 2-3 years. This gives the calendar 12 or 13 months per year, averaging close to the solar year length.

Chinese Zodiac and Elements

The Chinese zodiac assigns an animal to each year in a 12-year cycle: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. Combined with the 5 elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water), the full cycle takes 60 years. Your birth year determines your animal sign and element, which are believed to influence personality and fortune.

Lunar Age in Modern Practice

While most official Chinese documents now use the Gregorian calendar and Western age, lunar age remains important for traditional festivals (Chinese New Year, Mid-Autumn Festival), zodiac compatibility in matchmaking, traditional medicine prescriptions, ancestral worship and memorial dates, and the Chinese Gender Calendar for pregnancy prediction.
